Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Malacozoa , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Malacozoa ( H. M. D. de Blainville Man. de malacologie et de conchyliologie (1825) III. 363; < ancient Greek μαλακο- malaco- comb. form + ζῶον animal: see zoon n.) + -ic suffix. Compare French malacozoaire (1822 de Blainville). Compare earlier malacozoology n. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (mæ·lăkozōu·ik) /ˈmæləkəʊˈzəʊɪk/.

malacozoic series n. (T. H. Huxley's term for) a group of soft-bodied animals, comprising bryozoans, brachiopods, and molluscs and considered to form a related series.
