Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French malacologie.
Etymology: < French malacologie (C. S. Rafinesque-Schmaltz Princ. Fondamentaux de Sémiologie (1814) 48) < malaco- malaco- comb. form, representing ancient Greek μαλάκια molluscs (Aristotle Hist. Animalium) + -logie -logy comb. form.The French word gained greater currency from its use by H. M. D. de Blainville in Man. de malacologie et de conchyliologie (1824), where Blainville states (I. 2) that it is short for malacozoologie malacozoology n. and appears to present the word as a new coinage independent of Rafinesque-Schmaltz's use: ‘aussi avons-nous proposé [le nom] de Malacozoologie, ou par abbréviation, Malacologie’.
