Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: French mal; Italian mal.
Etymology: Partly < French mal malady (11th cent. in Old French in this sense; use as noun of mal bad: see mal- prefix), and partly < Italian mal, variant (before the preposition di ) of male sickness (use as noun of male badly < classical Latin male : see mal- prefix). Compare corresponding use in classical Latin of malum (originally neuter singular of malus bad) in sense ‘disease, sickness’.Compare use in various phrases borrowed < French, as grand mal n., mal de flanc n., mal de mer n., petit mal n., etc.
Obsolete.
A disease, a malady. Cf. evil adj. 3b, 7a.
