Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Makarov.
Etymology: < the name of Nikolaj Fëdorovič Makarov (1914–98), who designed the gun.The designation PM, which sometimes follows the name, is an abbreviation of pistolet Makarova, the Russian name for the gun.
A type of self-loading pistol.The original 9mm gun was developed in the Soviet Union in 1951 for military and police use and went into production in 1954. It was later also produced in a number of other East European countries and in China.
