Etymology: Probably partly (i) < Turkish medrese (compare English forms corresponding to a pronunciation /məˈdrɛseɪ/), probably partly (ii) < Persian madrasa, probably partly (iii) < Urdu madrasa and its colloquial variant madarsa, and partly < their ultimate etymon Arabic madrasa, noun of place < darasa to study.The forms Medarsa , Medersa reflect colloquial Maghribi (especially Moroccan) Arabic forms. The origin of the South African English form madressa (in sense 2) is unclear: compare Afrikaans madrassa, madressa.
