Origin: Apparently from a proper name. Etymon: proper name Madison.
Etymology: Apparently < the name of Madison Square Garden, the sports and entertainment arena in New York City, where the first such race was held in 1892.
Cycling.
A relay race for teams of (usually) two riders, traditionally lasting for six days, but frequently of much shorter duration. Also attributive in madison race.The earliest six-day races (apparently referred to at the time as ‘Six Days’ and ‘Grinds’) were for individual competitors; the first team event was held in 1899.
