Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Maigret.
Etymology: < the name of Commissaire (also Inspector) Maigret, the fictional detective-hero of a series of novels by Georges Simenon (1903–89), Belgian-born French novelist.Introduced in the novel Pietr-le-Letton (first published in 1931 and translated in 1933 as The Case of Peter the Lett), the character appeared in more than 100 widely translated novels and stories.
In allusive (frequently ironic) use denoting: a person engaged in stealthy investigation or psychological deduction. Also in Maigret-type.
