Origin: A borrowing from Duala. Etymon: Duala makossa.
Etymology: < Duala makossa, derivative of kosa to peel or remove the skin of (a fruit or vegetable); the name refers to the twisting and shaking movements of the dancer.
An African dance rhythm originating in Cameroon; music using this rhythm.

1985 J. Collins Afr. Pop Roots vi. 49/2 Makossa music, the Cameroonian form of Highlife, is a base for new creations like the Disco Makossa of superstar Manu Dibango.
1987 C. Stapleton & C. May Afr. All-stars ii. 98 Like asiko and ambasse bey, makossa changed with the times. It became a guitar and percussion music, and absorbed flavours from highlife, rumba and merengue.
1993 Folk Roots Aug. 55/1 Ecclesiastes, with its funky bass and synthesisers, yields a catchy dance-beat that is reminiscent of makossa.
