Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese makiwara.
Etymology: < Japanese makiwara, lit. ‘roll-straw’, originally denoting a target in archery practice (1604 as maqiuara in supplement to Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam) < maki- (see makimono n.) + wara straw.
Karate.
An object (originally a post or board covered with straw, hemp, etc.) intended to be struck during training, esp. in order to toughen the skin of the hands and feet.
