Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi mahuā.
Etymology: < Hindi mahuā, mahūā, moā < Sanskrit madhūka < madhu sweet (see mead n.1). Compare mowra n. N.E.D. (1904) enters this under mahwa and gives the pronunciation as (mā·wa) /ˈmɑːwa/.
1. Any of several Indo-Malayan trees of the genus Madhuca (family Sapotaceae), whose seeds yield an oily, butter-like substance; esp. M. longifolia var. latifolia, a large oak-like tree of central and northern India with sweet, fleshy, edible flowers that are distilled to make a spirit and seeds that are used in the manufacture of soap. Also mahua tree. Cf. iluppai n.
