Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Nepali. Partly a borrowing from Assamese. Partly a borrowing from Bengali. Probably partly a borrowing from Malayalam. Etymons: Nepali mādal; Assamese mādal; Bengali mādal; Malayalam maddaḷam.
Etymology: Partly < Nepali mādal, partly < Assamese mādal, and partly < Bengali mādal, all < Sanskrit mardala . In quot. 1914 probably < Malayalam maddaḷam, ultimately also < Sanskrit.
A double-headed drum used in Nepal and eastern India. Cf. mridangam n.
