Etymology: < scientific Latin Macrotherium (E. Lartet 1837, in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 5 424) < macro- macro- comb. form + -therium (see megatherium n.).

Palaeontology.

A genus of large Eurasian chalicotheres of the Miocene epoch; (also macrotherium) a chalicothere of this genus.
