Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French majestueux.
Etymology: < French majestueux (1605), either < post-classical Latin maiestuosus majestic (mid 16th cent., rare), or independently in French < majesté majesty n. + -ueux -uous suffix, after e.g. somptueux sumptuous adj. and adv., voluptueux voluptuous adj. Compare earlier Middle French magesteux (late 16th cent.).The form majestious is perhaps the result of compositorial error, or is perhaps independently formed < majesty n. + -ous suffix.
Now rare.
= majestic adj.Now chiefly in the usage of speakers whose first language is French.
