Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin majestaticus ; Latin māiestāt- , māiestās , -ic suffix.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin majestaticus (a1204 in Petrus Blesensis; 1682 in Henry Dodwell), or independently < classical Latin māiestāt-, māiestās (see majesty n.) + -ic suffix (compare -atic suffix). Compare Middle French majestatique (1581, rare). Compare earlier majestical adj. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (mædʒėstæ·tik) /mædʒɪˈstætɪk/.
Obsolete.
Relating to the majesty of God. Cf. majestical adj. 2.
