Etymology: < macro- comb. form + -podous comb. form. Compare earlier macropodal adj.
Botany. Now rare.
Of a monocotyledonous embryo: having a particularly large hypocotyl. Formerly also: †having a radicle that is large relative to the cotyledon (obsolete).

1849 J. H. Balfour Man. Bot. 284 The length of the radicular portion or that below the gemmule varies. It is usually shorter than the cotyledon..; but in some instances it becomes much larger, giving rise to what has been called a macropodous embryo.
1887 H. E. F. Garnsey tr. K. Goebel Outl. Classif. Plants 431 In the Helobiae the axial portion forms the larger part of the embryo (macropodous embryo).
1900 B. D. Jackson Gloss. Bot. Terms 151/1 Macropodous, used of an embryo with enlarged hypocotyl forming the greater part of its mass.
1911 Encycl. Brit. XI. 260/2 In many aquatic monocotyledons..there is a much-developed hypocotyl, which forms the greater part of the embryo and acts as a store of nutriment..; these are known as macropodous embryos.
