Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese maitake.

Etymology: < Japanese maitake (12th cent. as mahitake ) < mai dance, dancing (nominalized stem of mau to dance: see maiko n.) + take mushroom, probably so called because its clustered formation can resemble a group of dancers.The Japanese word can also denote a poisonous mushroom of the species Panaeolus papilonaceus; it has been suggested that its psychotropic qualities led to the name, but use denoting this mushroom is not attested until the early 19th century.
