Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit mahāyāna.
Etymology: < Sanskrit mahāyāna < mahā- great (see mickle adj.) + yāna vehicle (compare vehicle n. 6). Compare German Mahayana (1834 as Mahajana , or earlier). Compare Hinayana n.With quot. 1855 compare Chinese dàshéng , in the same sense, literally ‘great vehicle’ (after Sanskrit mahāyāna ; compare the discussion at Hinayana n.). Compare the following for slightly earlier use of the Sanskrit word in an English context:1831 Asiatic Jrnl. & Monthly Reg. 6 i. 161 The first [revolution] is that of the Buddhas (Maháyána), who, by their example, draw all beings into nirvana.1831 Asiatic Jrnl. & Monthly Reg. 6 i. 162 According to the inner or secret doctrine, denominated the doctrine of the great revolution (Maháyána), Buddha, or intelligence, produced Prajna, knowledge, or Dharma, law.
The later and more widespread of the two major traditions of Buddhism, now practised in a variety of forms in China, Japan, Korea, and central and northern Asia. Cf. Hinayana n., Theravada n.The tradition emerged around the 1st cent. a.d. and is typically concerned with personal spiritual practice and the ideal of the Bodhisattva.
