Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit mahāyāna.

Etymology: < Sanskrit mahāyāna < mahā- great (see mickle adj.) + yāna vehicle (compare vehicle n. 6). Compare German Mahayana (1834 as Mahajana , or earlier).
