Forms: 1800s Mo-hale, 1800s– mahaly, 1900s– mahala, 1900s– majella, 1900s– mohale.
Origin: Probably a borrowing from Valley Yokuts. Etymon: Valley Yokuts mokheːo.
Etymology: Probably < Valley Yokuts, e.g. Chawchila dialect mokheːo woman, and similar words in other dialects.J. R. Bartlett in Dict. Americanisms (ed. 4, 1877) suggests an alternative derivation from Spanish mujer woman.
