Forms: 1600s– macrocolum, 1800s– macrocollon Brit. /ˌmakrə(ʊ)ˈkɒlən/, U.S. /ˈˌmækroʊˈkɑlən/, /ˈˌmækrəˈkɑlən/, 1900s– macrocollum Brit. /ˌmakrə(ʊ)ˈkɒləm/, U.S. /ˈˌmækroʊˈkɑləm/, /ˈˌmækrəˈkɑləm/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin macrocōlum.
Etymology: < (probably spurious) classical Latin macrocōlum, a reading in Pliny Nat. Hist. 13. 80 (compare quots. 1601 and 1945), taken to be from ancient Greek μακρόκωλος long-limbed < μακρός macro- comb. form + κῶλον limb (see colon n.2). The preferable reading macrocollum is believed to derive from an unattested ancient Greek *μακρόκολλον a wide sheet of papyrus < μακρός macro- comb. form + κόλλα glue (compare protocol n.). For further discussion of the form, meaning, and etymology of the Latin word see Classical Philol. (1994) 89 62 ff.

1601 P. Holland tr. Pliny Hist. World I. xiii. xii. 393 Claudius Cæsar..enlarged also the breadth of the Paper: for he caused it to be a foot broad, yea, and some a foote and an halfe, I meane that kind which was called Macrocola, or large Roiall Paper.
1825 T. D. Fosbroke Encycl. Antiq. I. 437 (note) The Macrocolum was a term for any writing or work on large paper, as well as a paper itself, at least sixteen inches long, commonly twenty-four, it being usual with the ancients to paste the leaves of books together; and when they made the last, or fair copy for the library, to write upon the large leaves.
1945 H. Rackham tr. Pliny Hist. World IV. xiii. 147 There were also eighteen-inch sheets called ‘macrocola’, but examination detected a defect in them.
1994 Classical Philol. 89 63 Cicero asks Atticus to have his marked-up final draft..copied onto a macrocollum.., from which we might infer the meaning ‘a roll of high-quality paper’ even without Cicero's mention in another letter of the expense of having copied a (multivolume) work onto macrocolla.
