Etymology: < (probably spurious) classical Latin macrocōlum, a reading in Pliny Nat. Hist. 13. 80 (compare quots. 1601 and 1945), taken to be from ancient Greek μακρόκωλος long-limbed < μακρός macro- comb. form + κῶλον limb (see colon n.²). The preferable reading macrocollum is believed to derive from an unattested ancient Greek *μακρόκολλον a wide sheet of papyrus < μακρός macro- comb. form + κόλλα glue (compare protocol n.).
