Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin maciēs.
Etymology: < classical Latin maciēs leanness, related to macer lean (see meagre adj. and n.1). In 19th-cent. English use after 18th-cent. use in post-classical Latin in medical discourse. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (mēi·siˌīz) /ˈmeɪsɪiːz/.
