Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Machupo.
Etymology: < the name of the River Machupo in Bolivia (see quot. 19651), where the disease was first recognized in 1959.
Microbiology.
In full Machupo virus. A South American arenavirus carried by rodents which causes Bolivian haemorrhagic fever in humans.

1965 K. M. Johnson et al. in Proc. Soc. Exper. Biol. & Med. 118 117/2 It is proposed to name the virus of Bolivian hemorrhagic fever Machupo Virus after the tributary of the Itenez river that flows through the present epidemic area of the Department of Beni.
1965 Amer. Jrnl. Tropical Med. & Hygiene 14 799/2 Machupo virus was inoculated into different tissue cell cultures.
1978 Brit. Med. Jrnl. 4 Mar. 529/2 Machupo causes a similar infection in rural areas of Bolivia, where sporadic outbreaks occur in the Beni region.
1995 L. Garrett Coming Plague (new ed.) iii. 55 It seemed obvious the patients had a viral hemorrhagic disease, but attempts to extract the virus based on probes used for other known hemorrhagic diseases (including Machupo and Junín) failed.
