Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish machismo.
Etymology: < Mexican Spanish machismo manliness (the pejorative sense may have originated in Anglophone usage) < Spanish macho masculine (see macho adj.) + -ismo -ism suffix. The pronunciation with /-k-/ is in imitation of words of Greek origin with ch.Attributive use has occasionally been criticized in usage guides.
The quality of being macho; manliness, male virility, or masculine pride; the display of this.
