Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. magniloquent adj.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin magni-, magnus.
Etymology: < classical Latin magni-, combining form of magnus great. This, and the comparative and superlative forms maior (see major adj. and n.1) and maximus (see maximum n.) from the same base, are ultimately cognate with mickle adj.
Forming a small number of adjectives with the sense ‘having (a) great ——’, and of nouns based on them, on the pattern of classical Latin magniloquus, magniloquentia.
