Etymology: < magneto- comb. form + -sphere comb. form (see quot. 1959 at main sense).
Atmospheric Physics and Astronomy.
The region surrounding the earth or a celestial object in which its magnetic field is effective and prevails over magnetic fields due to other causes (in the case of the earth not spherical but much elongated on the side away from the sun).
