单词 abite
释义

abitev.

Forms: see a- prefix1 and bite v.
Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old High German irbīzan to destroy by biting (Middle High German erbeizen , German †erbeißen ) < the Germanic base of or- prefix (compare a- prefix1) + the Germanic base of bite v.In Old English a strong verb of Class I. In the following example abite apparently shows an alteration of abye v. (the rhyme is with wite (see wite v.1); perhaps compare also abide v.); association with the present word seems unlikely:a1500 (a1460) Towneley Plays (1994) I. ii. 21 We, yei! that shal thou sore abite.
