Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin māchinālis.
Etymology: < classical Latin māchinālis < māchina machine n. + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare Italian macchinale mechanical, automatic, recorded by Florio (1611) in the phrase ‘machinale scientia, the arte of framing any machine or engine or complotting’; French machinal spiritless, dully mechanical, recorded in this sense from 1731 and slightly earlier in the phrase matière machinale, parts used in the construction of machines.
