Etymology: < ab- prefix + irritate v.1, after abirritation n. Compare French abirriter (1859 or earlier). Compare earlier abirritant adj., abirritative adj. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æbˌi·riteit) /æbˈɪrɪteɪt/. Compare the following earlier example of an adjectival form abirritating (in the sense ‘soothing’; compare abirritant adj.):1839 Amer. Med. Intelligencer 3 239 The soothing and abirritating plan of treatment.
Medicine. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
transitive. To diminish the irritability of; to devitalize. Cf. abirritation n.
