单词 | magneto-electric machine |
释义 | > as lemmasmagneto-electric machine magneto-electric machine n. (originally) an electric generator which utilizes the movement of a conductor in a magnetic field; (now usually) spec. one employing permanent magnets. The term was used in Faraday's sense by various writers down to about 1867, when the improvements of Wilde, Wheatstone, Siemens, Ladd, Varley, and others attracted much attention, and the term dynamo-electric machine was introduced by Brooke. This term was used by Brooke himself to denote a machine ‘in which dynamic energy is employed to produce an electric current’ ( Proc. Royal Soc. (1867) 15 409, footnote); by others, however, it was applied only to such machines as operated on the principle of self-excitation and contained no permanent magnets. Those who adopted the latter usage limited the meaning of magneto-electric machine; some included under that term only machines with permanent magnets, while others included under the name both these and machines with separately excited electromagnets. The later tendency was to confine the term strictly to the machines with permanent magnets.extracted from magneto-electricadj.< as lemmas |
