Etymology: Either < Machiavel n. + -ian suffix, or < Machiavelli (see Machiavel n.) + -an suffix.The forms in -vil(l)ian may well have been modelled on villian , a frequent 16th–18th-cent. variant of villain n. For the likely pronunciation of the first part of the word, see Machiavel n.
