单词 macheer
释义

macheern.

Brit. /məˈtʃɪə/, U.S. /məˈtʃɪ(ə)r/
Forms: 1800s macheres (plural), 1800s– macheer.
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish mochila.
Etymology: < Spanish mochila travelling bag, saddle cover (1495; current in the senses ‘rucksack, knapsack, backpack’) < mochil errand boy < Basque mutil or motil boy.The Spanish form with -ch- probably shows Basque ‘affective palatization’ of -t- , a process productive in forming diminutives. The -a- in the first syllable in English probably represents reduction of Spanish/o/ in /motʃ-/ to /ə/; -eer perhaps represents the American Spanish pronunciation /ija/ of the suffix -illa -illa suffix: compare the Spanish variant form mochilla (Pedro de Alcalá 1505), Catalan motxilla, Azores Portuguese mochilha.
U.S. regional (western). Horse Riding.
A leather cover for a Mexican saddle; a leather flap attached to a saddle.
