Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Machairodus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Machairodus ( J. J. Kaup Descr. d'ossements fossiles de mammifères inconnus (1833) ii. iii. 24) < ancient Greek μάχαιρα machaira n. + ὀδούς tooth (see -odont comb. form). Compare sabre-toothed adj. at sabre n. Compounds 2. Compare French machairode (1840), later machérode, machaérodus, machairodus.Cuvier had previously coined Ursus etruscus sive cultridens ( < classical Latin culter knife + rīdens grinning) as a name for a kind of extinct bear to which he supposed a fossil tooth, actually from Machairodus, to belong (see Kaup, as above).

A genus of sabre-toothed fossil felids; (also machairodus) a felid of this genus.
