Etymology: < Chinese lǜ.

In ancient Chinese musical theory, a fundamental pitch; any of the twelve pitches in an untempered chromatic scale; also used attributively to refer to (each of) a series of bamboo pipes used to produce these pitches.In Chinese, although known collectively as the twelve lǜ, there are two separate characters; lǜ for the odd-numbered pitches, and lǚ for the even-numbered.
