Etymology: Perhaps adopted (with change of sense) from Dutch lijfkoop, in Middle Dutch also litcoop, liefcoop, a luck-penny on the conclusion of a bargain. The Dutch forms are probably affected by popular etymology; compare German leitkauf of the same meaning, believed to be < leit (= Gothic leiþus) ale + kauf purchase.
