lysergic acid diethylamide n. /daɪˈɛθɪl-//daɪəˈθaɪləmaɪd/ the diethylamide of lysergic acid (in which the group —N(C₂H₅)₂ replaces the hydroxyl group of the acid), an extremely powerful synthetic hallucinogen which can produce profound changes in perception (esp. vision) and mood, with psychotic symptoms resembling those of schizophrenia, and which has been given orally in psychotherapy, usually as the water-soluble tartrate, a colourless odourless powder; also called LSD², lysergide n.
