Etymology: Origin unknown. Compare French mocok , maucauc , mococo (Buffon, 1765, probably after G. Edwards's use); compare also maki n.1 N.E.D. (1904) enters this under macaco and gives the pronunciation (măkēi·ko) /məˈkeɪkəʊ/.
Obsolete.
1. Originally: the ring-tailed lemur, Lemur catta. Subsequently: any of various lemurs and lemur-like primates. Cf. maki n.1ruffed macauco: see ruffed adj.1 Compounds.
