Etymology: < the name of Augustus Love (1863–1940), British mathematician and geophysicist who developed a mathematical model predicting the existence of such waves (1911 in Some Probl. Geodynamics xi. 160–161) + wave n.
Physics and Seismology.
A type of surface wave (surface wave n. 1) characterized by side-to-side motion of the particles as well as motion in ellipses as part of the forward movement of the wave; spec. a seismic wave of this type.
