lucky money n. money believed to bring good luck; spec. (in Chinese contexts) such money placed in a red envelope and given as a gift. [With use with reference to southern China compare Chinese (Cantonese) leih sih token of good luck, the money in the red envelope, literally ‘profitable dealing’. In other parts of China, reference is usually made to the auspicious colour of the envelope rather than to its contents (compare red packet n. and red envelope n. at red adj. and n.
