Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: French loto; Italian lotto.
Etymology: < (i) French loto (1778 in loto Génois , or earlier) and its etymon (ii) Italian lotto lottery (a1536), kind of state lottery played not by drawing lots, but by preselecting numbers on a card (a1705 as simplex in this sense; a1683 in lotto di Genova ) < French lot lot n. Compare German Lotto state lottery played with numbers on a card (1715; compare Lotto di Genova , Lotto di Genua (1771 or earlier), now hist). With sense 2 compare earlier lottery n.
1. Originally: a game of chance in which numbers are drawn at random and players place counters on corresponding numbers on cards, the winner being the first to cover a row or other required pattern of numbers; now usually called bingo (bingo n.2). Now chiefly: any of various educational games for children in which cards are matched with numbers, words, pictures, etc., on a board.
