Etymology: < the name of Lothario, one of the characters in Nicholas Rowe's The Fair Penitent (compare quot. 1703), a libertine who seduces the female protagonist.The name had previously been used for a somewhat similar character in William Davenant's The Cruel Brother. Compare:1630 W. Davenant Cruell Brother sig. A4^v Lothario. A frantique young-Gallant.It had also been used (in a Spanish context) by Cervantes in the first part of Don Quixote (1605) for a character who is persuaded by his friend to try to seduce that man's wife (as a test of her fidelity), a story which may have influenced Rowe's play.
