Etymology: < lowly adj. + -hood suffix, originally as an alteration of lowlihead n.In the text cited in quot. 1818, Todd marks the word as obsolete and cites quot. c1450 at lowlihead n. as an illustrative example of it, attributing the text to Chaucer.
Chiefly literary and poetic. Now rare.
The state or condition of being lowly. Cf. lowlihead n.
