Etymology: < scientific Latin Loricifera (see quot. 1983) < classical Latin lōrīca lorica n. + -fer -fer comb. form + scientific Latin -a -a suffix²; compare -ifer comb. form.

Zoology.

With plural (or occasionally singular) agreement: a small phylum of minute invertebrates that adhere to particles in marine sediments, characterized by a spiny anterior introvert and an abdomen encased in a cuticular lorica. Also (with plural agreement): animals of this phylum (collectively or individually).The Loricifera constitute one of the most recently discovered phyla, and they are thought to be aschelminths related to rotifers and nematodes.

2000 C. Tudge Variety of Life ii. v. 201 The Loricifera is a newly discovered phylum, but more than 100 species have been described from marine sediments of all types.
