Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < either 'long adv.2 (with reference to the position of the casks relative to the keelson) or long adj.1 + -er suffix1. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (lǫ·ŋgəɹ) /ˈlɒŋɡə(r)/.
Nautical. Obsolete.
1. A row of casks stored next to the keelson.In quot. 1841 perhaps: a single cask forming part of such a row.
