Etymology: < (i) Italian longa (1593 or earlier), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin longa (frequently from 13th cent. in British sources), use as noun (short for nota longa long note) of feminine of classical Latin longus long adj.1 Compare earlier long n.1 2a, and also earlier breve n. 2.With the form longo in quot. 1638, compare discussion at -o suffix.
