Etymology: Connected with Old English loddere beggar, poor wretch. Compare Old High German lotar adjective, vain, idle (Middle High German lotar adjective, loose, unsteady, loter , lotter noun, mountebank, rogue, modern German dialect lotter , loose, exhausted; also in modern German lotterbube blackguard, and in other compounds: see Grimm). The Old Germanic stem *lod- is related by ablaut to *leuþ- in lither adj.
