Latreille Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière, des crustacés et des insectes (1802) III. 277; < Locusta , genus name (in Geoffroy's sense: see note) + -ariae , plural of -aria : see -ary suffix¹) + -an suffix.Confusion in scientific usage arose from the application by E. L. Geoffroy (1762) of the genus name Locusta to insects called by Linnaeus Gryllus (Tettigonia). N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (lō^ukɒstē^ə·riăn) /ləʊkʌˈstɛərɪən/.
