Locrian mode
2. Music. Originally: designating the 7th eidos or mode of the ancient Greek diatonic series (a-a' in modern terms, but perhaps formerly misunderstood as B-b) (historical). In modern use: designating the diatonic scale b-b', divided at f', or its plagal equivalent f-f'. Chiefly in Locrian mode. [Compare Hellenistic Greek ἡ Λοκριστί ἁρμονία harmony in the Locrian manner, French mode locrien (1777 or earlier). The ancient Greek author Pindar says that a kind of harmony (ἁρμονία) was devised by one of the Locrians (Λοκρῶν τις), who has been identified as Xenocritus.]
