Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: lock n.2, lock v.1, bridge n.1
Etymology: In senses 1 and 3 < either lock n.2 or lock v.1 + bridge n.1; in sense 2 < lock n.2 + bridge n.1Earlier currency is perhaps implied by a place name, although the sense of the first element is unclear: Lockbridge, near Walthamstow, Essex (1586 as Locke Bridge, or earlier; now apparently Lea Bridge; originally denoting the bridge itself, compare a bregge called the looke (1486)).
1. Perhaps: a bridge which can be locked to prevent access. Obsolete. rare.
