1. A fielding position at some distance from the wicket, esp. one situated behind the bowler and near the boundary; (also) a player fielding in such a position. Frequently with complement denoting placement relative to the batter, as long field straight off, long field straight on, etc.; also in long field to the hip: square leg. Obsolete.
