Origin: A borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Etymon: Scottish Gaelic lochan.
Etymology: < Scottish Gaelic lochan (Early Irish lochán ; < loch loch n.1 + -án, suffix forming diminutives).Attested slightly earlier in place names apparently formed in Scots, e.g. Suteis Lochan, Langlochan (1670), Germories Lochane (1673), all in Kirkcudbrightshire.
