Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian locanda.
Etymology: < Italian locanda (1534) < post-classical Latin locanda to be let, (short for *camera locanda , *domus locanda room or house to let) use as noun of feminine gerundive of classical Latin locāre to let (property) (see locate v.). With quot. a1694 compare Italian camera locanda room to let (1544 or earlier).Compare Est locanda, the name of a famous inn in Rome, which gave its name to a comedy by F. de Silvestris (1648; < Italian regional (Rome) est locanda available for rental, to let, lit. ‘it is to be let’).
In continental Europe, esp. Italy: a small hotel, guest house, or inn.
